I posted about this rear end in Performance Years and was directed to this site. As of now I still have not been able to figure out the year of this rear end and what it could have possibly been out of. It is currently in a 65 GTO, but I know it is not original. It is a 336 limited slip rear end.
I am pretty sure it is a Buick from the information you gave me before, but then the trail goes cold.
It measures 54 inches between drums and a little over 54 inches between flanges. The casting number is 1375689, there is another number on the driver's side below the web CFD2, and there is the number 45 on a metal tag held on with two screws above the web on the passenger's side.
Here are the pictures that I took.
Thanks again,
Dale
Help Identifying Rear End
Re: Help Identifying Rear End
HR, Yes this is the 8.2 early Buick 10 bolt. IT will have ALL the same parts as the pontiac 10 bolt 8.2. gears and posi units interchange even bearings are the same. it does have a different yoke and pinion seal.
This could possibly be an original rear for your Pontiac as I have had plenty of restoration guys state that they had original cars with this rear in it. The extreme HO Pontiacs received the Pontiac rear and the lower HP cars might have received this rear in 64 65 years. Double check with AMES performance they could possible know the PONTIAC answer.
So this 10 bolt Buick casting rear is what you have. It will have sealed bearings also. This rear should be fine for all street application and mild strip runs at the track even with slicks as long as it was assembled correctly.
That is always the key. Take care - Jim J D Race.com and thatnks for using the site.
