One of my axle original from 69 GTO (8.2 10 bolt diff.) is causing vibration and need to be replaced. I had for a long time as spare parts, what I've been told a set of 69 or 70 GTO axle. When I remove my original axle and compared to the one I want to use as a replacement, I notice some difference.
Here is a picture and the right one is the original on my GTO wich need to be replaced. Both have the same lenght, they have 28 splines. The difference is the bearing but when i measure the diameter, it looks like a sealed bearing would fit on the left axle
Can someone tell me if they are interchangeable and what application the left axle is it for.
I would like to installed a new sealed type bearing on the axle (left one on pic) to fit in my 69 housing
Thanks!

Re: 69 GTO axle shat ID
Ok the axle on the right is a sealed bearing axle the one on the left is a tapered oiled bearing with external seal that is installed on the axle shaft.
THESE 2 axles ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE. They have two different flange to bearing offset .
The right axle uses a inner axle tube seal that does not let the inner differential oil get to the bearing.
usally the 69 70 71 72 have the tapered fully oiled bearing...IF you have a very early 69 it might still have the sealed bearing.
If the one on the right is the origianal you will need any 67-early 69 axle shaft from a buick skylark (NOT GS), olds 10 bolt or OLDS 12 bolt 'O' type, or even a FIREBIRD axle will be the same length. 29 3/4" but it must have the sealed type bearing.
sealed bearings are RW507CR and the seal is 8594s
Are you sure the axle is bad or just the bearing?

Re: 69 GTO axle shat ID
thanks for the information.
The shaft seems not straight. Here is what I did. I raise the rear of the car and remove the brake drum. Then I notice that the shaft could move al little in and out and when in transmission in drive the plate (where we have the stud) move front to rear (using a static piece to see the movement). Could a bad bearing have that kind of variation (almost 1/4 inch)
Thanks!

Re: 69 GTO axle shat ID
Yes that is the only thing it could be...BUT... but... ONLY after you remove the defective bearing can you tell if the axle shaft press on surface is good too. IF the bearing has spun on the axle shaft the axle is also doomed. I am crossing my fingers for you that it is ONLY the bearing...WHICH is normally the case.
Check it out will be waiting... Remember to remove the press collar first with a cut off tool only enough to weaken the piece to take a COLD chisel to remove the rest of the way. DO NOT CUT into the axle shaft ... A small nick here or there is ok but NOT a huge gouge. Some times the press collar will snap when cutting through it... which would be good luck for you, almost no chisel work required.
Then after it is removed press off the old bearing and inspect your axle. Clean it and see where we stand. Jim

Re: 69 GTO axle shat ID
I did exactly what you mention, thanks!
Now here I am with my axles. The one that was moving front to rear is still moving the same way with the new bearing. The surface was looking good as no bearing had spun on the shaft. So I guess i need a new one.
On the other side I also replace the bearing and eveything is fine exept that I have a side paly of .020'' which is acceptable (up to .032'' as per my shop manual) But still since I had no play at first does this mean that the collar might not be pushed all the way down against the bearing?
Also I have a spare standard (non posi) 66 GTO differential which has the sealed bearing. I plan using one shaft to replace the one that is bent but have problem to remove it. Seems that the outer side of the bearing stuck in the housing. (Was outside installed on the car for more that 20 years without moving). Any tricks on how to remove the shafts
Thanks again

Re: 69 GTO axle shat ID
If you have an old GM drum install it on backward with about 3 studs just on the end threaded so the drum will slide from the flange to the nuts you just installed...Use the drum as a slide hammer and keep yanking till the shaft pops out.
A slide hammer rented from a local advance auto etc will also be a good deal.
Even a chain wrapped around the flange and again yank hard...really NO pretty way of getting it done. A hammer usually IS NOT a good plan as you will usually dent the flange and or could bend the axle flange. Jim
