1978 Formula Sunbird

Post by Bomber79 »

Not a new area, but I am rebuilding my 78 Formula Sunbird and I will need a strong rearend that can handle up to 600 horsepower. Additionally, I want to put on disc brakes. What are my options for a bolt in operation? Where are you located?

Not much as options.
You will need a donor rear end for brackets -
12 bolt chevy we use the camaro Moser center for the torque arm connection and then have to weld on the brackets from the donor rear to your NEW Moser housing 12 bolt rear...Same with Ford 9" or any other aftermarket set-up.

We just ladder bared our race car...
BUT you might be able to make that more streetable with more travel...ours is only about 3" in the back for travel...it is only a race car...not a street car...even though it does not look like much of a race car...as you see it - 9.95 1.300 60foot 26 x 10 slicks 10 bolt 8.5 rear 33 spline axle full spool 3.73 gears 350th trans 5000 stall trans brake leaving at 3200 377 destroke 400. SBC stocke gm 400 block

600hp on a Limited slip unit is pushing its capability way too far also.
just a no win with that kind of power -
you start getting into wave trac 1500-2000 posi units 35 spline axles...just way out of wack pricing.

what are your intentions with all this HP

anything can be made its just MONEY where the problem comes in....
disc brakes are VERY VERY hard on a H body with out tubbing the cars inner fender well WHICH is basically the FRAME of the back of the car.

IF YOUR JUST HANGING AROUND THE STREET - Build the 7.5 rear... 28 spl9ine axles Posi and gears. It will take it. If you are hitting the track with stick shift or high stall slicks then ...well you likely need an up grade. !2 bolt chevy rear for your car will be in the 40000.00 range Not worth the effort for a street car.
My race car is 10 bolt 8.5...BUT it is a RACE car and ladder bar coil over rear suspension so it is NOT really street bound ever.
My daughter has a 7.5 in here monza 1980 and a small block Chevy 270 hp and does 14.50 with 2.56 gears...lol. It rips the tires all the way down the street with the 2000 stall and SMOKE is everywhere...lol... were going to do overdrive soon and 3.08 ratio soon.
