10 or 12 bolt G-Body housing
10 or 12 bolt G-Body housing
How much is a 8.5 10 bolt or a 12 bolt housing to fit a G-body? This will be for drag racing purposes only. I have a set of ford 11" drum brakes that have the 4.75 bolt pattern already. I want to put those housing ends on so i can use the brakes i already have. I called moser and asked about axles for a 10 or 12 bolt to run with a ford end and they said no problem. i realize i need different upper control arms which i see can be bought for such a project as mine.
Re: 10 or 12 bolt G-Body housing
From some back and forth discussions with you Jim, you have convinced me to run a gm rear for my 80 malibu wagon. im looking for a 8.5 10 bolt or 12 bolt hosing now. plan is to have cut down to fit my g-body and running 33 spline axles and full spool with ford housing ends (i like those better than c-clip elim's).
Re: 10 or 12 bolt G-Body housing
Are you building it as we do sell housing and axle package or whole rear.
The 10 bolt 8.5 center we use is the 73-77 A-body GM and will require some upper control arm shortening or we have J D RACE upper control arms custom build just for our rears that will articulate fully and is double adjustable for complete pinion angle adjusting for street strip application and spherical road end for the best transition with the suspension. (145.00 a pair installed)
We also have a 10 bolt 8.8 ford center that is already built with MOSER 31 spline race axles (with GM 5 on 4 3/4 bolt pattern) FORD large bearing ends like you want and GM flange small bolt pattern for camaro / chevelle type muscle car brakes...common GM mid size brake flange pattern. It has a trac lock and 3.73 gears but a FULL 31 spline spool can be installed pretty quickly no extra fees.

Re: 10 or 12 bolt G-Body housing
I was planning on assembling the rearend myself. How much for the 8.5 or 8.8 housing and axles?
Re: 10 or 12 bolt G-Body housing
Housing with Ford ends... (we need the exact bolt pattern that is on your drums. )
G-body 8.5 or 8.8 will be about 250.00 (plus shipping)
axles are 355.00 (plus shipping direct drop ship to you from Moser will save the most money)
If you want the FORD axle bearing retaining plates and studs that will be another 95.00
So were looking at about 750.00 ish shipped to you. Will depend on if you are further from 44286 on the shipping too. Jim
We sell the custom upper control arm double adjustable with spherical rod ends. 145.00 a pair

Re: 10 or 12 bolt G-Body housing
That sounds good. i will measure the drum bolt pattern tomorrow. I live just south of Norwalk so I would just come up and pick it up when ready. I will get with you soon, but just to give u an idea on what we will want built. 8.8 ford for G-body with bolt in axles, would like to go with 33 spline for running a transbrake. i see moser sells a regular style 1350 yoke for the 8.8's. I might just buy everything thru you( gear, yoke, install kit, axles) so i will get with you soon.
Re: 10 or 12 bolt G-Body housing
The spool would be the Moser deal as it will match the axle shaft spline better. 33 spline for some reason is a very NON INDUSTRY standard...Everyone strange moser gm all have different 33 spline cuts on the spline....???
What ratio were you going with?

Re: 10 or 12 bolt G-Body housing
going with 4.56 because of my malibu wagon being heavier.
Re: 10 or 12 bolt G-Body housing
1/4 and some 1/8. I will be running a powerglide w/ a 1.82 first gear. will be turning around 7000 rpm so i want either a 4.30 or 4.56 gear. The wagon will probably end up weighing around 3400 pounds.
I still have to measure the brake bolt pattern so i can tell you what housing ends to put on.

Yah there are 3-4 Ford ends. Go to Moser engineering and pick the right one. They should have the measurements. Jim

Re: 10 or 12 bolt G-Body housing
Any chance to get a photo of the 8.5 or 8.8 actually in a g-body chassis to see how they fit?
Re: 10 or 12 bolt G-Body housing
Nothing - as you could not really see anything. it is stock width and will look just like stock.
No tires hanging out etc. The upper control arms are built by Ice Man racing in MO and we send the rears to him he fits the rears in his chassis set-up and he makes the arms to fit each rear.
Here are a few from him. best we have. 10 bolt 8.5
Trust me we have done our home work. It is the upper control arms that make it all work as we have only other center to use and G-body uppers are all on there own. So with the custom uppers it takes up all the twist and articulation that can happen. ALL other connections are stock.
We can modify the ends to fit your needs of street or race if you need bolt in axles etc.
OPTIONAL REARS ARE - 8.8 FORD, 8.5 CORP GM, AND 12 BOLT CHEVY. WE HAVE CONTROL ARMS TO FIT ALL THESE REAR OPTIONS

Re: 10 or 12 bolt G-Body housing
Do you know what the difference would be from 8.8 to 8.5 as far as driveshafts. I heard you need a shorter one for the 8.5's.
Re: 10 or 12 bolt G-Body housing
Yes BUT if you were to install the 8.5 GN rear in your g-body it is still the same requirement. So 1" usually does the job. A lot of guys will just go to local yards and measure for a fit. But around here it is 75.00 for a shortening and rebalanced of the drive shaft...The re-balancing is a good thing after years of use and abuse.
8.8 I do not believe it will require a shortening. The pinion shaft is shorter than the 8.5 rear.
Jim
