10 bolt gear upgrade wanted

Jim, my car is a '71 Skylark with a 2.56 open 10 bolt 8.5 rearend with 28 spline axles. Car has a '72 350 bored .040 over, mild Isky 262 cam and 700r4 tranny. I'm looking to upgrade the rearend, to have more take off power, but don't wanna spend alot. Just hotrodding around in it, no dragstrips. I'm thinking about 3.42 or 3.73 since it has O/D. What do you think? Can I use my carrier with an adapter plate? Will I notice difference with open or should I go ahead and change it to posi now? Whats my cheapest route, I'd be happy with? I'm looking at doing it myself. Thank you.
