65 Chevelle 10 bolt

Post by models916 »

Here is what I have. 10 bolt 8.2 housing from a 65 Chevelle. Motive Chrome Moly c-clip axles. Yukon posi. Motive 4:56 ring and pinion. I has a Koyo bearing install kit. GM axle bearings. Strange cap support rear cover. Everything is new. This is going into a 62 Belair that weighs 3820 has a 400hp 409 cu in engine with a 700r4/3,000 stall 10" converter. One piece driveshaft. Street driven hot rod, may make a 1/4 mile run at some point, but more likely not. At what horsepower point am I looking at breakage? Should I fab up the triangulated upper links like the Chevelle or weld on the original style 4 link with the track bar? Looking for opinions. Thanks, Mike

There really is NO point at which we can tell you when the rear will give. This is why Drag racing is not a warrantied deal.

You have a fairly heavy car with one of the smallest rears GM put in a Muscle car.

The pinion is only 25 spline smaller than a 7.5 pinion shaft

IF...if everything was installed correctly for the street it should do the job fine.
IF you hook up at the track with the 10" converter you could be in for some trouble...AGAIN most of what a rear can take will be limited by the install more than anything on a particular rear. 350-400 foot lbs at lower than 3000 RPMs is very hard on a rear.
The street is forgiving as the tires will rarely hook...Track sticky track even with street tires could be trouble for spider gears - pinion shaft- u-joint-

You do have ALL aftermarket parts Sooo you are as strong as you can make it that is a good thing....

I hope some of this helped you some- Stock 4 link is a ok design and should again be able to handle the power and torque IF you have installed your drive line for the chassis correctly.

The triangular 65-1996 GM control arm system is superior to the older Impala three or even four link with track bar.
