Howdy,
I bought a rear axle off a friend of mine and i would like to identify it (ratio, year, posi, what its off of). It is a 10 bolt axle and the code stamped on the axle tube is JD G270 1 (), and it looked like there was something else in the () but couldnt really manke it out. The guy told me that it came off of a 68 camaro, but i am not sure if this is completely true or not. The back cover is round almost a circle, and the driveshaft retaining bolts on the yoke are 4 bolts with two straps. I know its a GM axle but as far as whats inside i dont know. The guy i got it from said that he thinks that it has a posi in it. When i opened it up it looked like it did but im not an expert. I tired to find the ratio by just counting the revolutions of the axles verses the yoke and it looked somethin 4.somethin ballpark area. I ve been researching for a while now but been drawing up blanks. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Cody

One more thing, the reason i think its a posi is because it had like an "s" shaped spring type thing in the differential betweent the spiders. Would that be a considered posi? Sorry but i dont have any pics. Im really trying to learn, thats why i ask.
Thanks again

Cody

Cody, Glad to see you using the sight. PIctures are always best...BUT sounds like from the info you gave we should be able to get it IDed.

The S-spring is the indication of a 8.5 posi unit. USUALLY

Now if the gears are ORIGINAL GM they will have the gear tooth count of the ring and pinion on the edge of the ring gear outer diameter. It will also have the ring gear part number and even a date code on some GM gears.

IF they are aftermarket or Richmond gears they MAY NOT have the ratio stamped into the gears. SO counting is the only way. Count the ring teeth and count the pinion teeth and divide the pinion count into the ring count IE 10 pinion teeth 41 ring teeth 10 into 41 goes 4.10 or a little over 4 to 1 .

Now if it truly fit into a camaro it will have to have a spring center line of 42 7/16 inch center to center of the spring perch. The 8.5 rear WAS NEVER stock in a 1st gen camaro or firebird.
A 1972 -1978 v8 NOVA is truly what the rear is and it will bolt directly into the camaro...BUT you will need to shorten the drive shaft about 3/4". THIS should NOT be done til lthe rear is bolted into the car and measure before you are to shorten the drive shaft. ALWAYS!

Here are a few pictures that will help also check the ID DIFFERENTIAL section in this forum to help with IDing the rear and finding all the bearings and seal part numbers needed. Jim
