I have a 71' or 72' 10 bolt corporate 8.5 rear with a 2 series posi carrier. I run a spacer behind the ring gear of my 3.42 gear. I have the chance to pick up a rear with a 3 series posi from a 79' Camaro. Will the carriers interchange? I understand that some 8.5's had c-clip axles,but are the carries different between the c-clip rears and bolt on axle rears? Will the axle spline count be the same too? Is there a list or rule of thumb as far as 8.5 carrier interchange?

Ok, good question:
IF you have a c-clip type 8.5 posi OR open differential YOU CAN use this type in either c-clip or bolt in axle 8.5 rear applications.

IF you have a bolt in axle posi unit then it can ONLY be used with a bolt in axle application rear. This is because the side gear does NOT have a c-clip retention cut back pocket for the clip to seat into.
