68 Chevelle 8.2 upgrade

Hello, I am putting together a 68 Chevelle for my son and it currently has the original 8.2 in it.
I am pretty sure that it wont hold up to the 454 and 700R4 that is going into it.
In any case with an open 2.56 gearset it probably has to go.
I have access to a 76 ElCamino 8.5 with posi and 3.42 gears but am pretty sure that it may be too wide, If thats the case I am open to suggestions.
A build up the 8.2 with aftermarket posi and gears
B narrow the 8.5
C find another rear that is a direct fit with stronger insides.
any suggestions are welcome and thanks for this great website....

i GUESS IT DEPENDS ON THE money TOO. yES/no? We have 10 bolt 8.5 that will be a direct bolt into your chevelle. Only mod you will need is a drive shaft shortening of about 3/4" and a larger U-joint.

We have one pre built here with 3.42 gears 959.00

195.00 will get you all new complete brakes...everything. bleed and go rear.

We can also build one to your specs with any posi gear set aftermarket axles etc. if money is on the loose side...lol. Jim

LOL the only thing here on the loose side is the global economy!. Seriously Jim this sounds like a winner. can you please email me at invstr396@netzero.net with your number and details.
I just realized that I had posted on a separate forum here so I will keep this post as my main one.
Is this rear housing from what body syle? Just curious because I was aware that some 70 chevelles had 8.5 ring and pinions, is that the one?
thanks

No chevelles came with 8.5 until 1973. I know some people SAY that they have one etc. BUT over 40 + years anything could have ended up under any car. lol.

FROM the factory 10 bolt 8.5 rears were only in the 71 72 Buick and olds. That is IT. Jim

Okay I am pretty much convinced this is the way to go. Drivehaft cutting no problem. But just out of curiosity is this an 8.5 center pumpkin installed into an actual 68-72 chevy 8.2 tubes? Just curious how that is done, I guess the axle tubes are the same diameter or am I off on a total goosechase figring out this monzaz magic?

LOL...GOOSE CHASE... This is a GM housing. NO MAGIC. already done from GM just an existing housing.

Jim

It is a direct bolt in INCLUDING the rear drum brakes...ONLY thing that needs to be modified is the drive shaft length and maybe the u-joint which we also can sell you so you have everything you need in hand. :) Jim

Monzaz, i would also be intereted in a bolt in 8.5 10 bolt for my 68 Chevelle, from the sounds of it you custom build them, how much would it cost to ship one simular to the one mentioned or if that one oictured didn't sell to zip code 99928?

LOL Jim. sorry I was out a month. yes 30 degrees in miami.... lets just say people were going bananas!
on a side note almost every central ac in miami has a heater control on the temp gauge... but no heater in the air handler!!
11 renters called me that week and they all wanted to know . Wheres the heat?
Shipping is going to require savings but I am panting for that rear... I also need to know about the u joint needed,, price etc?

U-joint is a easy swap with a off the shelf 3-3130 neapco, 5-3022X spicer, or 372 percision...All these are the same joint just different manufactures.

The last thing you will have to do is cut the drive shaft 3/4" ish OR find one at a local yard the correct length... this should NOT be done until you install the rear and measure the exact amount first. But for the extra strength you get with a 8.5 and bolt in axles it is a small price to pay. Jim

Alaska...Still working on your price. Not so easier getting into the island area cheaply . :( Jim

Is this a commercial area? Or residential? MAkes a pretty big price difference. Jim
