I just posted on the rear cover ID.

thought I'd ask about most likely spot to find a tube stamping on 67 Olds housing, but then it dawned on me that it probably isn't an Olds anyway.

Is there a 'general guideline' on about how far off the center section I should be looking for a stamp? This thing has paint and rust, and I've not found so far. I didn't know about how far I should be looking.

Another way to look at is is that if I keep going, I'll have one side pretty much cleaned up for new paint....

I found the ID stamp on my 71' GTO on the front of the passenger side alxe tube. I found the one on my 67' Camaro on the front side of the drivers side axle tube. Both were about 1/2 way between the pumpkin and backing plate. FWIW
I would imagine if alot of rust,you might not even be able to see the stamping anymore. Mine were stamped very light,but both were pretty much rust free rears.
I also found if you hold a trouble light at various angles while looking,sometimes you can see the shadow of the stamping easier. This has worked well on finding engine codes on old rusted engine blocks. HTH

Please feel free to answer and help where you can..GOD nows I only have so much time in life and the rear diff builds are around the block here. That is good and bad.

Well axle tube stamos really do very from company to company and year to year.

Pontiacs are usually on the back of the tube between the spring perch and the center section...NO definite distance either on any of these.
Olds in the year you have were passenger side back of the tube again between spring perch and cast center section
Buick 64-67 driver side front (not totally confident with this one so still questionable)
buick 68-70 bottom of axle tube facing the ground driver side tube between spring perch and center section again.
Buick and Olds 1971 1972 axle tube facing back of the car passenger side (usually) This is the one you have and Buicks 8.5 will have the traditional 5 and 7 o'clock triangular casting ears off the bottom. Old 8.5 10 bolts did not and are very stealthy and appear to look like a chevy rear diff. The cover and bumps on the casting axle tube collar are a dead give away as the yoke is too. Jim
