Oldsmobile 1971 10-Bolt Rear Axle

Hi.

Just have some confusion regarding the identifying of
a '71 Olds 10-Bolt Axle with Positraction.

It was thought to be from my brother's '71 Olds 442,
which he bought brand new with a 3.42 positraction
rear axle. It was built just after the Union Strike ended
in February 1971.

The code cannot be found on the passenger axle tube
due to rust and scaling. The axle has C-clips, and
clutches, not cones, with an "S" spring. The axle cover
has pinion gear bulge, and the brow from the 12:00 to
3:00 positions.

My friend insists that it is a Chevy rear, as it does not
have a cone positraction, and has "C" clips, not bolts.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

I see we're covering this on CO forum too. Last of the cone posi in Olds was '67. Everything you describe is correct to a '71 *except* clips. Are you *sure* there are clips?

PLease post some pictures of the rear end ...center section front and back spring perch mount area etc.

This is the only way we are going to get your problem solved...IF it truely has c-clip axles it is chevy...

in 1970 cmaros were the first to use the c-clip 8.5 rears 1971 1972 buick and olds used the bolt in style 8.5 rears with the clutch 'S' spring posi units.

Thanks to everyone for their assistance with trying to identify
the 10-bolt rear axle. I will recheck the rear axle to ascertain
that the axles are either bolted or c-clipped. I will also try to
get photos.
