My gear pattern

Post by 67drake »

This is where I am at with a .042" shim under the pinion. Looks maybe like the pinion is a hair to far from carrier? Funny thing is I had .044" under there previously, and it looked as though it was definitely to CLOSE. I wouldn't think that this setting is so touchy that putting it at .043" would be perfect. Also there is no way I can get exactly .043" with the shims provided with the kit. So it is either .042" or .044". What is your opinion of the pattern as is?
These pics are taken at opposite places around the ring gear, for an overall view. BTW,I'm showing .003" lateral runout on the ring gear, what is within tolerance? All surfaces were de-burred on ring gear, spacer, and carrier, and put together oiled, and clean.Backlash varies anywhere from .005" to .008",depending on where I measure it.
Thanks!

Very good, What is the backlash. Looks like your ready to get driving. :)
Remember to break in the new gears 2-3 short 5 minute runs and 15-20 min cool downs. This will properly temper the gears. Then you can beat on it.

VERY good job with the set-up.

Take care, Jim

Backlash varied depending on where I checked it. I checked in 90 degree increments around the ring gear and it was between .005-.008". If you look at the middle photo of the links I posted, does that one look like the pinion is too deep? This was the best I could get it. Coast side looked right on to me.

I would leave it. backlash being .003 ...hummm Well lets hope that is dirt or oil throwing the measurement off. Does the pattern look to run out too? Jim
