type "O" rear end?

Post by hogdog666 »

O.K. here we go-trying to find a posi unit for 67 cutlass.type "O" 12 bolts on cover,10 bolts on ring gear.3:08 gears.reads 13A40 gm p334.also stamped on gear is 12016.carrier # 156. the only numbers I can find are raised numbers on the pumpkin and they are 393820 on bottom passenger side.driver side has raised letters CFD and DE .on top of center is a big"M" (or w)about 1.5" square raised letter.Backing plates are off and measures 55.5 inches.Axles are bolted on with sealed pressed on bearings,28spline,8.5 ring gear.Any help on this would be really cool. Just triing to find out what year this is and what years & makes interchange? Thank alot Doug. 8)

Ok, Well NOT A THING interchanges. Only 12 bolt 'O' type posi unit will fit.

So- 1967 1968 1969 1970 are all interchangeable

posi carriers are as follows :

673 2 series posi holds 2.56-2.78 28 spline axles
672 4 series posi holds 3.42 - 5.38 31 spline axles 67 and 68 ONLY!!
671 3 series posi holds 3.08 - 3.23 28 spline axles
588 4 series posi holds 3.42 - 5.38 28 spline axles

we have 2 sets of 3.08 gear on the shelf
we have 2.56 gear set also

We are TOTALLY out of posi units.

NOW after market stuff:
Some companies are selling a ford 8.8 high bred (low bred...lol) just cause it is a FORD product...lol
They are using the ford 8.8 28 and 31 spline posi units with a welded on inner ring and redrill ring gear flange to accomplish a posi unit for these rears. Just alot of work and at the price these guys are selling them for I can not make any money selling the 12 bolt old rear as the aftermarket gears are way expensive from Richmond too.

Richmond gears avaialble are:

These gears fit the 671 carrier which is the 3 series v=carrier...Just alot more of them out there and you can use a 8.5 modified spacer to use the 673 2 series posi and get the 3.42 and 3.90 and 4.10 aftermarket gears to work also.

3.42
3.90
4.10 Maybe...???

We have used the 8.5 power trax in a open 2 or 3 series olds 'O' carrier and it works great wit the 28 spline axles. If you really wanted it to be exactly perfect you should used the 71 72 skylark or old cutlass 10 bolt axles as they are the proper 45 degree sline. But for a street car the standard 1967-1970 axles will do the job.

I hope some of this info will help you and other in the 'O' type rears. Jim

Here are some pictures to help you find a 'O' type posi unit. Jim

DO BE CAREFUL AS THE STANDARD 10 BOLT 8.5 WILL APPEAR TO LOOK THE SAME...CASTING NUMBERS ARE YOUR ONLY HOPE...USE THEM AND IF THE UNIT DOES NOT HAVE ONE OF THE 4 YOU HAD BETTER NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. GOOD LUCK,

Those gears are absolutely perfect. I would use them with out any question.

The super car unlimted posi units are the MODIFIED 8.8 posi rearend from FORD. So that is up to you. They are too expensive for us to make any kind of money building the rear.

If you have that money I guess it is your only choice really. I wish I could come up with a better solution. We build posi rears with the lock right power traxs units. seems to work pretty good but you will have clicking in the turns. Just noise though that is how that unit operates.

I know this is an old post, but you said that The "Richmond gears fit the 671 carrier which is the 3 series v=carrier...Just alot more of them out there and you can use a 8.5 modified spacer to use the 673 2 series posi and get the 3.42 and 3.90 and 4.10 aftermarket gears to work also."

I have a series 2 open carrier and wanted to know if the 3.42 or 3.90 gears would fit with the spacer you mentioned and also what do you mean by a modified spacer?

Yes 2 series carrier can hold RICHMOND 3 series 3.42 and 3.90 gears with the MODIFIED 8.5 corp 10 bolt spacer.

Holes and ID have to be modified to fit the carrier.

We do all this and sell them. Jim
