On my last outing with a set of 10" slicks on my 67 Goat I broke the drivers side carrier bearing cap on the ole BOP 8.2 (3:23 gears) got them too. What I would like to know is if any one sells a tougher cap for this unit. Also looking for a replacement set of 3:23s for it. I tried a cap out of another 8.2 rear I had and after torqueing it down found the ID to be approx. 7 thous. larger than the passenger side. I then bolted the passenger side cap to the drivers side and measured. It was the same dimension as when it was on the passenger side which tells me the cap from the other rear is not cut the same. What are my options with the differing cap and with any aftermarket cap I might find? Also would a TA rearend cover help this situation?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Broken cap on BOP rear
Re: Broken cap on BOP rear
Wow bad luck. Well the caps are machined for each rear But I would think a cap from another of the same rear should be closer than that...??? Is the cap the same looking same or close to same year? Does the cap have a big < or > on it? I have some extra caps here you can try.
Cover. Yes the T-A covers will help and I can get them for you if you like 149.00 plus shipping. probably about 7.00 to 10.00 for that. How old was this rear? Wondering if the gear failed first then took out the cap. That is usually the way it happens.
3.23 gears...NOthing right now on the 3.23 gears I have a set in a rear that I was selling. They are getting harder to find in good condition these days. 180.00 will get them for you. Normally 150.00 but I have to take them back out of the housing I just set them up in.
I can set up a nice 8.5 10 bolt for about 1100.00 that will be why stronger then the 8.2 Pontiac rear. we can even make it as strong as a 12 bolt with custom axle more more about 1400.00. Bothe the rear will look like a GTO rear from external view. Rear cover etc. still bolt in axles etc. everything. You will need to shorten the drive shaft about an inch because the pinion is larger in length and diameter. Just something to think about if your going to keep racing more often.
The 8.2 PONTIAC REAR is a pretty good rear and does have one of the strongest caps out of all the BOP rear 8.2 10 bolts.
Can you send some pictures of the rear you have for ID purposes. Just so we know we are both on the same page. Jim
Pictures of the caps and area that failed would be good to if you can. I would like to see the failed parts. Jim

Re: Broken cap on BOP rear
After buying another rear out of a '67 Lemans for the housing I discovered that my existing rear must be from a '64 or '65 as it is an inch shorter than the Lemans rear. The rear I bought has 3:08 open gears but no axles and I'm assuming my original axles are not going to work in the Lemans housing. My plan was to bolt the 3:08 gears to my posi and install it in the Lemans rear using my axles and brake components. Would the 1/2" shorter axles work to your knowledge?
I have purchased a 12 bolt rear from an A body but someone cut the spring and shock mounts off and installed leaf spring mounts. I plan on cutting off the leaf spring mounts and transplanting the spring and shock components from one of my housings on it. This is next springs project but for now I would like to get a 10 bolt going just to be able to move the car.
The caps I tried from 2 different rears that measured to large were from 67 housings and looked like different castings. They had the arrows like you described and the originals didn't. If you have some caps from an early housing (64 or 65) I would sure like to try them to see if I could get an acceptable measurement and fit. I also noticed that the pinion yokes on the 67s have a larger OD yet the same spline as the earlier housing. They look obviously stronger. Also the housing diameter for the pinion seal seat is larger on the 67s.
As far as the gears go , the 3:08s will work for the street and I'll gear the 12 bolt for the strip.
I'll get some pics of the damaged gears and cap and of the housing. Should have guessed it was an earlier housing as it had the flat spring perches that you bolt the spring to instead of the raised hump to locate the spring. It was coded YF which is correct for a 3:23 posi in 65 AND 67.
Your thoughts would be appreciated and also if you have a cap that would work I would gladly purchase it.

Thanks

Re: Broken cap on BOP rear
MR. goat, I really prefer to see some pictures of your diffs being built. The housings cap area and yoke area etc. to identify the rears. These 8.2 rears are tricky from year to year eras. Some have internal axle seals and some have them on the axles... The first 10 bolt might have been a buick 8.2 under a lemans etc. Please if you could show some pictures here or at mitschke454@windstream.net. Ok? I have caps for all kinds of diffs here but what to be sure we have the correct 8.2 caps there are at the very least 3 different caps for that rear 10 bolt.
If you need to talk you can call also I will get you a number. Jim
We have axles also. ... New and Used

Re: Broken cap on BOP rear
I will get you some pictures today.
Just a note. The rear is mounted with boxed lower control arms with swaybar,3" lift blocks under the springs for tire clearance,No-hop bars to improve upper arm geometry. The upper arms are adjustable for pinion angle correction and triangulation braces on the upper arm body mounts.
About a year ago the rear had been rebuilt with a new Auburn Pro series carrier and all new bearings and seals. All the set up specs. were adhered to with .008 backlash. as well as correct pinion and carrier bearing preloads. The rear was quiet and performed well until adding the slicks.
The engine is a mildly built 455 pulling through a M 20 four speed.
Your thoughts and tips are greatly appreciated.

Re: Broken cap on BOP rear
what are you launching at? RPM? Tighten the backlash anothe at least .002 if all you do is alot of drag racing. Where do you set the pattern? Keep the drive side toward the toe more and less out at the heel. Maintain a good gear face wipe though and do not through the coast side off too far out of wack too. Fine line to getting more out of the strength of the gear set. There is a threshold of power any gear set will take... Lets hope your not at it.
When shifting try not to let off the gas too much you will have to keep load against the drive side more good speed shifting is a tough practice . An auto trans is a much better choice for bracket racing. It shifts quicker and keeps constant forward motion and pressure on the drive side of the gear. The slap of the gear shift is going to kill the gear sets on any rear, any size too. Sticks are just plain brutal on gears clutches and even motors. Expect a High maintance toll for playing this stick shift game. It is fun but keep in mind to always have some money set aside for the FUN and FEEL of racing a stick car...
