So i found a 3.9 GTO posi rear axle for my 69 Skylard.
Well was posi, it seems to be slipping on the left side.
i'm thinking it needs new clutches.
Can you tell me what to look for to figure out if the diff is rebuilable?

Ok, well if it is a true factory Limited slip unit - it will be a Cone type unit. Usually can handle only one reconditioning.
To check the unit you will have to remove it from the rear diff housing. (removing the bolt in axles and then the carrier main caps after that the carrier can be pryed out of the housing . Be sure to keep all the shims and bearing races matched to the proper sides of the diff housing. This will make for proper reinstallion after the unit has been reconditioned.
Know that you have the unit out of the housing and on a bench you can remove the 1/2" bolts that hold the LSD together. Normal counter clock wise will remove these bolts. After all the bolts are removed you can split the carrier in half. TIP: watch closely and or make down how these parts come apart so you can reassemble them again.
Cone inspection : Inspecting the cones for surfaces that are shiney will give indication of wear. The bottom of the carrier flat area inside case both halves and the bottom of both cones flat bottom. If either of these have what looks like metal was rubbing you will need the cones resurfaced. ( NOTE : we are not talking about the conical part of the cone surface that is normal mating surface, it will look like spiral surface...this is ok to have shiney.
If they are shiney we can resuface the cones and give it some good life back again and reshim the spider gear for proper specs. If your not shiney then you probably have a dirt posi from years of not changing the rear diff oil and the unit parts should be cleaned , reassembled and new fluid with proper GM LSD additive restored into the housing .
