Help with a 10 bolt 8.875!!

Post by rockabilly66 »

Hi
I've an impala wagon 1981, with a 10 bolt rear end. When I took off the rear cover I found it was a 8.875 ring inside. 41-15 gear set. 28 spline. I want to put a 4.10 ring and pinion.
Anyone Knows if it is the same ring, pinion and carrier of the GM 12 bolt, car or truck?
thank you

No you are out of luck. You will be lucky to find a 3.42 ratio in that rear. It is a 8.75 rear in that year. Small pinion shaft same size as the 10 bolt 8.5. Dump that rear and find a 8.5 you will be able to get all the ratios and posi unit you want with the 8.5 rear. Jim

Sorry for the bad news but do not waste anymore time on that rear.

Oh and that is a 12 bolt rear end not a 10 bolt. Cover does not mean the ring has 10 bolts and vice verse. Jim

1965-1976 was the 8.875 rear with the large 1.875 pinion shaft.
