.....and it comes like it had to come...

Post by denis »

Jim....hope you remember-young guy from Germany

6 Years and many helpful advice later from you about bringing my weaky 7,5 Bolt rear back to life with new ring gear/posi and bearings for my 65 442 Olds...i know need again your advice about a stronger rear end because Drag Racing are know on the TO DO LIST....

But the situation is still the same...BIG DREAMS small BUDGET and it´s still very difficult to find any strong rear here in Germany which will hold if i use sticky tires on my heavy 442 convertible.

Maybe a can get a rear from a 1977 CHEVY EL CAMINO,is this rear a good starting point, don´t know which rear it is but i think a 8,5 is minimum what i need...what do you think.

best regards

Denis, The 1973-1977 rears will not bolt into your G-body rear...AT ALL. TOO wide by a lot. shocks are int he wrong spot and upper control arms are in the wrong spot Lower control arms in the wrong spot. This rear is about as far away as you can get to fitting a G-body OR a A-body 1964-1972 GM. Jim

What year is the car you are working on.

Jim, i assume a 8.2 wil not be a good starting point ,or is it possible to make them strong enought for my 65.
Found a guy how sell his 8.2 but its really expensive.
http://m.kleinanzeigen.ebay.de/s-anzeig ... /127331291

Its a 8.2 10 Bolt with eaton posi and 4:11 richmond gears from a 68 Chevelle.
I know it will fit but will time and money i investigate worth it?

Sorry for my english
Thanks

Yah and it is in a Chevelle meaning it is a CHEVY 8.2 which is weaker than you already have.

You need a 12 bolt chevy from a 1965 66 67 chevelle

71 72 Skylark or cutlass 8.5

those would be good options for you.

We can build you a custom rear to fit your car but that ain't gonna be cheap. Shipping and all too. Jim

Jim,correct me if i'm wrong:

My 7, 5"10bolt are 58.5" lenght.
The 8, 2" which was stock, are 60.5"
And the rears from the 73-77 bodys are 62, 5"

So the best was to find a rear from A-body 68-72 but an 8.5", and change the wheels and backspacing.
Very difficult!!!!

Yes- remember width will vary some with in 1/8 inch shorter and wider

Yes I say this because 10 bolt 8.5 has ALOT of part available and is still being built today.

You can take 2013 gears and they will fit into 1971 cutlass or Skylark rear. Jim

It is a big difference in housing length, from my 7,5 10Bolt to a 8,5 or 8,2" ?

What ratio is it? If it does not already have good gears PASS on it. Right now no one makes gears for these rears. It is a 12 bolt OLDS 10 bolt ring gear 28 spline boltr in axles. IT IS A good rear...BUT right now we do not know if ANY gears will be available for this rear again. :( JIm

Richmond was bought out by Motive gear and they have not made this gear in a year and a 1/2.

IF the rear has 3.08 3.23 3.42 3.90 then grab it. Jim
