Re: cheapest rear end for vega
Hi Tom, Well lets see if we can first detemine what you will be using the car to do MOST. You need to evaluate your driving habits like out of 100% what do you do most and percent out of 100%
Example: drag race at the track with slicks 20%
cruise on the freeway 30%
cruise around town 50%
I know you have 500 horses but where you use that power and what surface you are on will help determine the size rear I would recommend. Jim

Tom, The site will be switching over to another web host so it could be alittle bouncey here for a month. Just bare with us I am here ...
Ok well 80% sounds like your just gonna trailor this car to the track alot? If yes then ditch the torque arm and go ladder bar or four link. Ladder bar will be the easiest install for a noviest and will do the job very well.
I use alot of 8.5 chevy rears to make the monza and vega rears for draging and pro street. They are very readily available, reasonably priced and strong.
with the 9" and the 12 bolt you can get a torque arm to work becuase moser sell the center 12 bolt chunk and most other places including moser, strange, currie all sell the Ford 9" rears for the 1982 and up torque arm camaro set up rears.
I can build a 12 bolt chevy torque arm rear for the monza direct bolt in or a ladder bar 12 bolt or 8.5 set-up rear also. then you would take this rear with your ladder bars and cross member into your monza.
The 12 bolt direct bolt in rear will not be real cheap. I would have to work up a quote. custom housing could be almost 900.00 alone! your talking almost 1800.00 complete with a eaton posi, choice of gears, all new bearings, new 30 spline axles etc. THAT IS A DIRECT BOLT IN REAR THOUGH, IT WILL LOOK LIKE A STOCK 12 BOLT UNDER THE CAR.
10 BOLT HD 8.5 REAR - same width as a monza- 30 spline axles, posi unit, choice of gear, all new bearings. Includes backing plates also. 1200.00 for that
12 bolt with all the stuff shortened to monza stock width... 1400.00
if you go with a mini spool set up you can easily knock off 200.00 off each price. Ok? I do not build Ford rears here...Just by choice. I do GM stuff and am good at them. Specialist in one area, like a doctor....lol
All the rears pictured below are 48" from backing plate to backing plate and or 53.5 -54" wide over all. Jim

Re: cheapest rear end for vega
are you still bulding the 12 bolt rears for vega's?
Re: cheapest rear end for vega
Tom, always as long as I have vega housings to cut and use I can build the rears to fit stock applications for 1971-1974 vegas. If you want a monza /vega torque arm rear I can do that also but the price will be alot more for a close to direct bolt in on the torque arm rear. We need to use a Moser center section housing center to do the job. If you can ladder bar the car it will be alot cheaper also becuase the control arm mounting brackets etc are the laborest part of the housing build. Jim

Sorry I should have introduced myself...My name is Darryl (known as chesterkreetch) on this site...I have a 72 vega I'm running a 383 FI 550HP/565 FT lbs of torque I would like to run a 12 bolt built for an h body with f body torque mounts 3.73 posi gears.....I'll use spohn adj. torque arm and adj. lower control arms with a panhard bar....I use the car on the street more than at the track so this is why I have chosen this set up...lots of people I have talked with say it should hook up ok and I will be able to enjoy the cars handleing ability on the street....tires are MH srteet ET 235/60/15...any suggestions are always welcome as good ideas come from talking and shareing.....thanks Darryl

Welcome to the forum. I just wanted to let you know that I went in and cleaned up the quotes. They did not just dissapear to no where. I just wanted to make you aware that there is no need to quote the post your replying to if it is directly above. It just clutters up things for people, and makes things confusing. Not trying to scold or scare you off, just a friendly reminder.
Once again, thank you for using the forum, and Welcome to http://www.jdrace.com

Darryl, Say that you have enough money cause I would love to built it. I was going to do one for my self BUT NO time and the car that it will go into does not even have a motor yet...lol. Jim
So yes a moser center section will do it. BUT we need monza brackets. If you have a housing that is clean that can be used for these it would be great. All the housing we have at the moment are really not worth of this build.
As far as handling the torque and power on the street NO problem. the track will only depend on the control arms torque arm bolt and suspension as to what it will handle. Your not going to break the axles nore the gears or posi etc. the car is way too light. I would be more worried about the frame being tied and stuff like that.
I am sure if the car is clean and fairly solid it will not flex too badly. I did a rusty monza to 11.90 with NO frame ties but only 1.72 60 foot times because we were testing the 7.5 and everything stock. with 24" slicks 2500 stall 355 sbc Nothing to over board.
Just give a call and will discuss some options. Jim
