Axle Bearings

Post by jdon88 »

What type of axle bearings, seal, and inner retainer are these? Doesn't look like the Set9 type as pictured in the shop manual. This is from a 1976 Pontiac Grand Prix. It's a GM 10 bolt 8.5" rear, stamped code AA O which should be Olds bolt in axles 2.41 ratio. The rear is original to the car and the first time it's been opened. These are tapered bearings with the race set in the axle housing. One of the races was pulled partially out by the inner retainer? I guess I can't add pictures? I'll keep trying.

So I'm starting to think the bearing came apart when removing the axle and the outer part stuck in the axle housing. Are Set9 and A9 bearings the same? I see National A9 bearings supposed to be made in US while Set9 Timken are made in china.
Maybe this works for a picture: Image

That is the newer tapered bearing design SET9 A9 BR9 gear set.
No one makes the straight NON TAPERED axle bearing for these axles anymore.
1971 - 1976 era
seals will be 712146 .490 thick...NOW they only sell .470 seal thickness and that cause leak trouble with a tapered bearing combination.
