Buick 1971 10 bolt 8.5 on el camino 1969

Post by pb22bj »

Continue from ebay conversesation :)
Hello from Sweden :)

I have an el camino 1969 and it has a10 bolt
8.2 which every body says is a weak rear end
I was planning on buying a 9inch or a 12bolt
But they are expensive or hard to find specially for a body gm cars that have ears for the trailing arms... and gm have c clips
So I come accros this buick 8.5 10 bolt
And it has ears and bolt in axles and I got
It for 150 dollar so very Good price and People say it is a strong axle.
Right now I have a 383 stroker afr heads and hydraulic roller and weiand 177 blower
So I want to build this rear end very strong if it is possible?
Also have a lysholm twin screw compressor
Which can deliver more power than the 177 blower
The el camino is ment to be driven 90% om the streets.

SO I want to build ä strong rear end and Uppgrade to 30 splines bolt in axles...

Any rekomandation on parts?

Well we use the Moser 30 spoline custom built axles to replace the 28 spline Bolt in axles.
30 spline Limited slip posi
all new bearings and races
That sounds like a lot of power there.
I personally do the 12 bolt chevy rear even with c-clips we would use disc brakes in the back and that will be a c-clip elim effect so really c-clip rear will not be any issues with disc brakes.
PLUS c-clip axles just seal really well and do not cause leak issues like the bolt in axles do.
WE have had BIG trouble with the 8.5 rears not sealing good at the axle shafts. NEW or Used axles
The bearings are garbage in the market for that axle system these days.

Were taking the rest of the bolt in axle 8.5 rears and chopping the ends off and installing c-clip ends to solve this leak issue. tired of the calls...

Ok sounds intetesting
Think I have 500-550 hp now but the lysholm
Is capable of 800hp but thats in the future :) many parts to change
I like to have bolt in axles insted of c clips :)
Dont want to loose a wheel :)

2 WORDS (disc brakes)

get them for the rear and you can use ANY REAREND. They are your c-clip eliminator acting devise.

YEP, TROUBLE IS THE ENDS USUALLY RUN INTO THE LOWER CONTROL ARM BRACKET that will need to be cut some to load the end in square ...But yes anything can be done. Money just grows on trees right??
If you do not have a money issues WHY buy a 10 bolt 8.5...lol
Get a better rear all the way around.

You need to think this through... You have tons of torque and horse power and your dealing with a STOCK GM housing. It is silly
So many BETTER options out there.

12 bolt aftermarket with bolt in axles
9" aftermarket
Dana 60 aftermarket...

Your spending so much money on an inferior product.

Yes you are right
Maybe easier to buy a empty moser 12 bolt
And then deside gear ratio and lsd etc
They come with axles already
And they have bolt in axles
Are they welded in the housing ends already?
Do they have steel caps already?

These housings are premo... We use them for all our builds street and race.
Massive Main bearing caps
Machine cap screws larger than stock
Center casting is heavier cast than any GM casting (THICK!)
tubes are 3" OD and 1/4" thick American steel tubing.
ends can be had with any flange pattern you want Ford NEW OLD LArge or small GM small or large all with 3.150 bearing for bolt in axles
(you can get c-clip end too as we use for the street)
we normally go with 33 spline axles for the Chevy 12 bolt

If you have to have bigger axles we recommend a Dana 60 rear...

We have never needed more than 33 for stuff here.
Have to remember the more weight you use for strength the slower the car will go....you need to find just what you need for the quickest vehicle.

We order them all the time and can have it sent to any US port in USA.
Might be easier for us just to build the complete rear??
