64-67 BOP 8.2 vs. 68-70 Buick 8.2

Post by LARRY70GS »

What is the easiest way to tell the difference between the 2 8.2 rears? Member on V8 bought the 68-70 Buick Posi unit and gears from TA Performance and it does not fit. His picture of the rear does not help.

Think he may have a 64-67 8.2 rear?

Normally we have them send pictures and the Casting numbers are a REAL good way to tell the difference.
In our ID DIFFERENTIAL section we give the 68-70 casting numbers there are only 2 one ends in 700 and the other ends in 724 THOSE Are the 2 casting numbers for the 68-70 Buick rears and the T/A parts will fit that rear. WE call that rear 8.25 instead of 8.2 to try to cut the confusion.

Both the rears take the SAME rear cover so your really can not tell that way. We get pictures of the actual cast center we can see the difference as the 68-70 cast is VERY very thick compares to the 64-67 casting.

remember also that the 1964 65 buick rears will be narrower by 1" than the 66 67 68 69 70 which are all 61" over all or 55.25 flange to flange.

The biggest are internal physical features 68-70 rear has to difference size carrier bearings and the pinion shaft is 1.875 on the inner bearing.

Hope this helps some.
