I have what I thought was an 8.5 out of a '71 Cutlass but turned out to be an 8.2.....2.78 ratio

Can a 2.56 ratio 8.2 ring and pinion from a '67 A-body Pontiac be used in this Olds rear end? I know the bolts are smaller with the '67 ring gear but is everything else the same? (bearings,etc)

And was this type rear cover shown in the pic used only on the 71-72 Olds 8.5's or did it come on earlier 8.2's ('70 & older) that used the RW507C axle bearings?

Wow, Yah We really need more pictures of other areas to be sure...BUT it you truly say it has a 14 39 ring and pinion tooth count it has to be 8.2 Pontiac or Olds etc.
Some one put that cover on ...BUT really that cover should only fit CHEVY rear diff bolt cover....
SO if you could we would like more pictures before anything if you can remover that cover and give us a inside shot I think we can really clear up what you have there. Jim

What do those green areas you have circled signify?

The cover is similar to a chevy 12 bolt cover but the rib is shorter on this cover......runs from 12 o'clock to 3.

I just saw a couple of pics of this cover online on another forum and it was said to be a Olds corporate 8.5.

Better picture. You have a 10 bolt 8.5 corperate rear. (OLDSMOBILE) Buick looks like the traditional 10 bolt 8.5 with the casting ears.

I got some misinformation before and it definitely is 8.5 not 8.2

Tried to post a few pics but I get error message sayin too large.
I plan to sell this any suggestions as to it's value? It's a 2.73 open and everything appears to be in great shape. Was quiet as could be the guy I got it from told me and by looking at it I have no reason to doubt. It spins smooth and tight.

One more question:
Can a BR9 bearing be used with the BOP 8.5 such as this and the 8.2 instead of the SET9/A9?

It appears that br9 is the same as set9 and a9... just a skf number...I will check into that closer.

BR9 appears to be a one piece straight roller type bearing and not a tapered cup like the A9. The BR9 looks like the original bearing that is on this 8.5 I have....

Appears to be OLD STOCK. What was the name brand on the box? I am pretty sure no one is making them like that anymore. We have been looking for years and some times we get lucky and find some old stock boxed into new name brand boxes...lol. It happens and we like when it happens.
Another give away as to old stock is the bearing is made in the USA.
