8.2 Buick GS400

Postby pontiacpeje » Fri Mar 03, 2017 10:26 am

Hi! In process to restore my girlfriends rear brakes.A 1968 Buick Skylark GS400 Conv. Discovered that the rear bearing was bigger than on my 69 GTO.Why this VERY hard to find bearing?( RW507G) The same horsepower and torque as my GTO!

And on the rear axle shaft between the bearing and studs there is a casted number "442".Could it be a Oldsmobile shaft? Didn`t they use the CR bearings?
Best Regards Christian and Chatarina,Sweden.

yEP all GS BUICKS SKYLARKS got bigger axle bearings...Even in the rear center the bearings and parts are different than any other 8.2 BOP

Just Buick Divisions decision to keep ahead of the pack with HEAVY DUTY parts.

Good luck on that bearing there is a guy oin the V8 Buick site that has the GS Buick bearings still in stock.
RW507GR

Get them while you can.

that 442 is just a casting number of the axle shaft which may not even be that at all they had 399 377 and I am sure a bunch other casting number for axles. some had sealed bearings some had large shaft 1.437 some smaller at 1.382 some were oiled bearing some had 60 degree spline 28 count some had 28 spline 45 degree spline...

So that really only tells you what the axle was cast for in use.

Thanks for your reply! Some rumour says that the Canadian built Buick10-bolt had 3.08 instead of 2.93.Do you have any info?

No - Does not make a difference as anything can be ordered. NEVER ran across a 3.08 8.25 68-70 Buick Big Pinion, Big driver side carrier rear ratio yet.
2.56 2.73 2.93 3.23 3.42 3.64 3.90 4.30 those are the ratio might have been a 4.60ish also
The Pontiac and early buicks that all used the 1.438 pinion shaft siZE HAD THESE RATIOS -2.56 2.78 2.93 3.08 3.23 3.36 3.55 3.90 4.33 4.56 4.88 5.13
