8.5 BOP 10 bolt or 8.2??

Post by hughesfamily06 »

I am having a hard time identifying this rear end. It has the bolt in axles but the scallops at the bottom of the housing are throwing me off. It has 28 spline axles and the c shaped cut outs on the sides of the housing. Can someone please help me out? Thanks in advance!

1970 Pontiac 10 bolt 8.2 Pontiac rear

January 14th 1970 casting date

Hope this helps.

The original gears install will be a suffix 2 letter code
This suffix code will be on the driver side axles tube facing the back of the car.
(looks like you are scraping in the correct spot to find it already in the first picture

Thanks! Is it worth rebuilding being that it has bolt in axles or will it be equivalent to the 8.2 c-clip rear I have now? I have a 65 Chevelle that has a small block with about 400hp. If not what could I get for this rear if I sold it on CL or EBAY?

All rears will do the job no matter what HP torque etc...on the street. IT is the racr track that is sticky and will push the parts to the limits if over powered.

Bolt in axles are a nice relief if an axle or spider gears break they axles will stay in the housing and not ruin a rear 1/4 panel.

Gear available for that rear are as follows
3.36, 3.55 3.73 3.90 You might find 4.10 4.56 4.88 5.13 new BUT they are not really out there on the market much...No one is buying them like they use to when gas stations were on every corner and 50 cents a gallon. :)

Posi units Auburn posi, eaton posi and power trax are all available for the Pontiac 8.2 rear.
Rebuild kits and axle bearing kts are all available too.
