Is it possible to set pinion preload without a beam type torque wrench?

Yes you can guess and do it by feel....BUT you better know what a good preload feels like... :) Used will be less than 15" pounds and new will be 20" pounds.
Too tight and you will burn the bearings up...Too loose and the pinion will have deflection to the ring... It is not ROCKET science...But you could end up wasting more money than the cost of the wrench... See if you can borrow one from a local shop. Give them a 100.00 bill and they know you will be back... that is double what they cost...UNLESS they have a MATCO tool...lol. :) Jim
