67 Skylark to 64 Special

Post by msht9o »

Will the ring and pinion in a 67 Skylark 3 spd work in a 64 Special auto trans rear end? If so, what parts are required from the 67 for the transition?

If your are taker the ring and pinion from one to the other you will need nothing - BUT you may have to reshim the pinion and the carrier from housing to housing. So I guess a pinion and carrier shim kit would be helpful. Why not just swap rears? Or do your tires come that close to the outer rear 1/4 panel?
If you can use aftermarket rim just change the back spacing to 4.5 or 5"

What gear ratios are you working with? Jim

The 67 rear end that we found was 2.93, or so I was told. I am wanting a 3.06 or lower to put into my 64. So far I have not been able to find a BOP rear end. I do have a 64 Chevelle 10 bolt that is supposed to be a 3.06.

Yes the ratio your referring is a 3.08 12 pinion teeth and 37 ring teeth

True pontiac rears use the 13 pinion teeth and 40 ring teeth

I am still confused here so you do not have a 67? you have a 64 with 2.93 gears and you want to go to 3.08? y/n? IF this is what you want to do the swap from 2.93 to 3.08 wiill hardly be noticable at all. Might not be worth the effort.

You can retro fit chevy gears into a BOP housing. We have all the parts and knowledge to pull that off. REALLY does not take too many special parts

IF it is a Buick housing you will need the chevy yoke, chevy 10 bolt 8.2 seal, and the pontiac 4 series 3.36 -4.33 posi or open carrier .,.. You can also use the chevy carrier BUT the axle splines will be a bit sloppy in the side gear. Jim
