Interchange between bolt-in and c-clip carriers/rears

Post by 67drake »

Jim,
I have an 8.5 71' Cutlass rear I plan on rebuilding. It has an open carrier right now. I have the chance to pick up an 8.5 posi carrier from a Nova,so I assume it's a c-clip type carrier. From what I understand I can use a c-clip carrier in a bolt in axle rear, but NOT the other way around ,correct? If I can use the Nova carrier,is it any weaker as compared to the bolt in axle carrier due to the c-clip area that is not being used?
Thanks!

1972-1979 Nova carrier will fit your 1971 1972 BIA Buick just fine.

Same carrier NO differences. they all interchange (except for the 726 725 carrier castings which are BIA only) ... they have no side gear c-clip provisions.

Clutches are interchangeable from 726 725 and 410408 410409 side gears are also interchangeable from carrier case to carrier case.

Hope this helps. MAKE sure your used Nova rear posi is not all worn out if your spiders have excessive slop reshim the clutches to take up the slop. Jim
