chip in gear tooth

Post by 67drake »

I have a used R/P that I plan to install in my 8.5". One of the teeth has a chip missing from it. The chip is all the way on the outside top of one of the ring gears coast faces, I believe well out of the pinion contact area. Would it be OK to smooth this area down with a file or grinding stone to relieve stress, and use it,or is this set shot? I realize it would be BEST to replace them, but budget won't allow it at this time,so either I deal with this chip,or the rear does not get set up.

If you post a picture we could be more certain ti was not critical. BUT YES make sure there are no sharp edge BUT do only remove necessary amount to do so. I am sure it will be fine.

ANY Idea how it happened? Jim

Sorry, not the best pics, but the good camera is not working. The damage happened during shipping from the seller, and he won't stand behind the problem (Don't get me started!).
