Help ID'ing 8.5 10 bolt

Post by 67drake »

I'm just trying to get an exact ID on this rear. I am told 71-72' Pontiac, but what kind of car? GTO,Gran Prix? It has no brakes,so if I can get an idea of what kind of car it came out of,it would make buying brake drums, shoes, ect alot easier. It measures roughly54 3/8" between backing plates. Thanks!

The 5 and 7 o'clock triangular casting areas on the outside of the cover area will make it a 8.5 and then the 4 equally spacer bumps on the cast center where the tubes are pressed into the center section cast center are another way to tell which this rear has. Also in 1971 1972 the carrier caps that you have with the upper right arrow out and the lower left carrier cap arrow pointing out and the casting number is 8.5 1970 -1975 bolt in axle rear diffs.

I know that it is 1971 1972 buy the spring perch location and shock mounting location.

8.5 10 bolt rears also have the 1330 yoke with 4 bolts and 2 straps ...other BOP rears used u-bolts and 4 nuts. on there 1330 u-joints.

The 8.5 BUICK center casting will also have a large 'A' cast in between the cast upper ears as you can see in the picture. Jim

So this is a Buick 71-72',correct?
Any idea if this would be a skylark,or Fullsize rear? Just would make it easier to pick up brake parts for if I know the car model. If I go to the parts store and ask for 71' Buick rear drums and shoes, for example,I think they will want me to be more specific.LOL
Thanks

Yes, the buick cover will have the pontiac looking cover and the olds will have the round chevy looking cover. BUT all the internals are the same. So either olds cutlas or Buick Skylark will do the trick for buying parts like brakes and bearings etc. Jim

JUST remember it is a 1971 1972 ONLY.
