Re: Oldsmobile type ‘O’ 12 bolt question

IT WILL NOT FIT your 672 or any POSI unit carrier case. THEY are totally different. You need a OPEN carrier with just regular open spider gear case.

Re: Oldsmobile type ‘O’ 12 bolt question

The spider gears on the posi unit look like they are DONE. So I can see why you were looking for some. That will be a HARD find as these rears were only used in 67- 70 era...then less were posi and EVEN WAY less 67 68 year only and 3.42 - 500 ratio only were 31 spline units. sooo very needle in the ...

Re: Oldsmobile type ‘O’ 12 bolt question

oK, wELL welcome to the site...Hope we can straighten some stuff out for you. The deal : 672 casting is 31 spline only... Some one has obviously been inside the carrier and swapped out the side gears IF a 28 spline axle fits this carrier. 672 carrier holds FACTORY ratios as follows 3.42 3.90 4.33 4....

Re: 8.2 Buick posi Oil type

Do not buy Gear oil with limited slip additive in it... REASON: You do not know what the % on additive to oil is in that bottle. THEY never tell you that... we have had nothing but failure with the additive in the gear oil. Buy the oil - and the additive separate. They only way to insure the % of ad...

Re: 8.2. Buick Carrier Gear Pattern

ok, get the carrier in there if you have new bearings on the carrier the same original shim pack really should get it done... as long as the gear set was original to the housing and was running good. (noise free) AGAIN if you are reusing the carrier bearings and races and you can pull the carrier ou...

Re: 8.2. Buick Carrier Gear Pattern

yes about 10 inch lbs of spinning torque...obviously not a standard click torque wrench.
remove the in out play on the bearing and work the nut against the crush sleeve till the achieved spin is correct.

Re: 8.2. Buick Carrier Gear Pattern

Grey area. ---- If you can pull the carrier out by pulling the ring out of the case then it is too loose. IF you are destroying the shims tapping them in it is too tight. A 'J ' machinist bar should have to be used to pry the carrier out of the bearing saddles. THERE IS a GM spin test BUT that is do...

Re: 9.3 identification help

well that number that is C 30 9 is likley a date code C = month (MARCH) 30 = day 30th day of march and the 9 = the year 1949 in this case
It is NOT 1959 because i know what those castings look like and that is not one pictured.
So my best guess is a 1949 rear end Oldsmobile.

Re: 9.3 identification help

it is likely a early 1952- 1956 era 9.3 rear. You have to pull an axle shaft.
if the axle shaft is 10 spline it is Pontiac 16 spline Oldsmobile
or vise versa...Have to check that out more. Hang on will try and get some research on it. Jim

Re: 8.2. Buick Carrier Gear Pattern

looks good to me . Button it up. Or you can keep putting some gear oil on till you get a absolute pattern with out the frosting effect . I always put my marking compound in a little plastic little mixing dish and some gear oil mixed... thins it out and also makes it go further. As is it looks pretty...
