Re: Tube Stamp on 67 Olds
I'm not the guru Jim is,but I figure I'll let you know what I do. I found the ID stamp on my 71' GTO on the front of the passenger side alxe tube. I found the one on my 67' Camaro on the front side of the drivers side axle tube. Both were about 1/2 way between the pumpkin and backing plate. FWIW I w...

Re: My gear pattern
Backlash varied depending on where I checked it. I checked in 90 degree increments around the ring gear and it was between .005-.008". If you look at the middle photo of the links I posted, does that one look like the pinion is too deep? This was the best I could get it. Coast side looked right ...

My gear pattern
This is where I am at with a .042" shim under the pinion. Looks maybe like the pinion is a hair to far from carrier? Funny thing is I had .044" under there previously, and it looked as though it was definitely to CLOSE. I wouldn't think that this setting is so touchy that putting it at .043...

Re: A few set up questions
Jim,on # 4, the web site (I believe it was "justdifferentials) said to retain the carrier BEARINGS with green locktight. But,like I said I have not read that anywhere else,so just wanted your opinion on that. Also,I bought a ring gear spacer and a longer set of new bolts from you.The ring gear ...

A few set up questions
Hi Jim, a few questions came up while starting the work on my 8.5. Some may be obvious, but I don't want to take a chance and ASSUME anything here. 1. Difference between 5 cut and 2 cut gears? I ASSUME 2 cut means one cut on the coast and a seperate cut for the drive side of the ring gear, correct? Th...

8.2 to 8.5 swap u-joint/pinion yoke info
I am in the process of planning my 8.2 to 8.5 swap in my 71' GTO. Doing this swap means I will have to shorten my driveshaft to work with the 8.5 rear. One of the questions I had was how to adapt my old driveshaft (or a donor,as in my case) to the different pinion yoke on the 8.5. The original pinio...

Re: shorten driveshaft swapping from 8.2 to 8.5
Ahhh, thats so obvious I guess I missed it,use an Olds or buick driveshaft. I thought of another question. Is there a difference between 4-speed and auto trans. driveshafts, length wise? I've heard there is,but not sure. I have a 4-speed so it might be a bit harder to track down a Olds/buick 4-speed dr...

Re: Help ID'ing 8.5 10 bolt
So this is a Buick 71-72',correct? Any idea if this would be a skylark,or Fullsize rear? Just would make it easier to pick up brake parts for if I know the car model. If I go to the parts store and ask for 71' Buick rear drums and shoes, for example,I think they will want me to be more specific.LOL T...

Help ID'ing 8.5 10 bolt
I'm just trying to get an exact ID on this rear. I am told 71-72' Pontiac, but what kind of car? GTO,Gran Prix? It has no brakes,so if I can get an idea of what kind of car it came out of,it would make buying brake drums, shoes, ect alot easier. It measures roughly54 3/8" between backing plates.Th...

shorten driveshaft swapping from 8.2 to 8.5
I'm going to be pulling my stock 8.2 out to put a 8.5 10 bolt in my 71' GTO,I understand I need to shorten my drive shaft. I figure I'll measure from trans to rear end before I pull the old one,and remeasure with the new rear installed. Instead of cutting the original,I'm looking for a donor. Were t...

At what torque/HP level do axle tubes need welding?
I'm building a 8.5" for my 4-speed 71' GTO. At what point do I need to have my axle tubes welded to the housing? I'm at about 380 HP,guessing around 450 ft. lbs. torque out of my 400. I run the car at the track for test and tune on street tires, but MIGHT use slicks sometime in the future. Would...
