Re: Gear pattern
So I was setting up for .008 backlash and noticed an issue, probably cheap gears as you said...I thought I set it at .008 but after measuring in a few places I had inconsistent readings. I went back and measured backlash at every tooth and it varied from .003 to .009, seems like too much to me. I'll...

Re: Gear pattern
Here are pictures with .034 pinion shim and .014 backlash. I thought just a few thousands would make a big difference in pattern? http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=596381&d=1660441504 http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=5963...

Re: Gear pattern
I have more trouble trying to add pictures than I do working on the car. Here are some more pics with different backlash, I don't see much difference. .034 pinion shim, .009 backlash http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=596378&d=1660441258 http://forums.maxperfo...

Re: Gear pattern
It's a USA Standard Gear 3.08 ratio. I'll make some adjustments today and try to post more pictures. I'm replacing the stock open differential with an Eaton Truetrac. Yesterday I changed the pinion shim to .030 just to see what changed with the pattern, it looked too high on the tooth which is what ...

Re: Gear pattern
I changed pinion shim from .039 to .035, backlash is .006/.007. I don't see much difference in pattern. http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=596290&d=1660315239 http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=596291&d=1660315258 http:/...

Re: Gear pattern
Sorry I didn't provide enough info. It is a GM 10 bolt 8.5" with bolt in axles from a '76 Pontiac GP.
Pinion depth is .039" and backlash is .006"
Thanks.

I'm setting up new gears, what do you think of the pattern? http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=596147&d=1660076308 http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=596148&d=1660076337 http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/forums/attachm...

Re: Axle Bearings
So I'm starting to think the bearing came apart when removing the axle and the outer part stuck in the axle housing. Are Set9 and A9 bearings the same? I see National A9 bearings supposed to be made in US while Set9 Timken are made in china. Maybe this works for a picture: http://forums.maxperforman...

Axle Bearings
What type of axle bearings, seal, and inner retainer are these? Doesn't look like the Set9 type as pictured in the shop manual. This is from a 1976 Pontiac Grand Prix. It's a GM 10 bolt 8.5" rear, stamped code AA O which should be Olds bolt in axles 2.41 ratio. The rear is original to the car a...

Re: New Guy Here
I use the car for mostly weekend cruising, occasional burnouts, short duration trips. The cam I installed was from Ames and described as 'OEM replacement for GM 066 cam'. I don't have the duration numbers handy. I plan to replace the leaky 350 with a 455 in the next year or two. From what I have rea...

New Guy Here
Hello all. I just joined this site since I plan to upgrade the rear in my car soon. I was going to take it to a professional shop but after watching many videos I think I can handle it myself with support from this site. I have a 1976 Pontiac Grand Prix, mostly stock. The rear is the original GM 10 ...
