8.2 Buick posi Oil type

Can I use limited slip gear oil or do I have to buy the posi additive and regular 80W90 gear oil?

Re: 8.2. Buick Carrier Gear Pattern

I believe the preload on the carrier bearings is good based on your comments, what should the preload be on the pinion (don't want to over crush the crush washer)? Online it says 6 to 7 in-lbs for used bearings/gears, but wasn't sure if it should be more with the carrier installed.

Re: 8.2. Buick Carrier Gear Pattern

I am using the shims that i ordered from you. I now have the backlash set to 0.009" and I am still getting a similar pattern, it seems to be removing the compound from the entire tooth of the gears (not that half moon shape I see in everyone else's pattern). I also used the squirt of oil as sug...

Re: 8.2. Buick Carrier Gear Pattern

Thanks Jim I am back out in the garage tomorrow and will try a little gear oil. Bought this rear end for my 70 Cutlass and the pinion nut was loose when I received it, so I took it apart to check the condition of the gears and bearings (all of which appear to be in good shape). I did break one of th...

8.2. Buick Carrier Gear Pattern

I am in the process of re-installing the carrier into my 8.2 Buick rear end and have the backlash set at 0.007" and I am not getting any distinctive gear pattern, see picture attached. Any advice on how I can confirm that this is setup properly or how I can get a distinctive pattern?? It is col...

Re: 8.2 Buick Rear end Axle Bearings

Hi Jim, I wasn't sure of the diameter of the axles so I removed the race from the housing and luckily there was a number on them. As of right now I am only looking to get the crush sleeve, pinion seal, carrier shim kit and the marking compound. Want to test the rear end without replacing the bearing...

Re: 8.2 Buick Rear end Axle Bearings

I have attached a picture of the inner pinion bearing, the race from the axle bearing, the crush sleeve on the pinion (no ID that I can see) and the pinion itself. Looking at the number on the inner pinion bearing it looks like it is a GS only bearing, but looking at the axle bearing race it looks l...

8.2 Buick Rear end Axle Bearings

I have an 8.2 Buick Rear end (1385724) with Axle Diameter of 1.437 and I am wondering if there is any bearings and seals available for this rear end? Also looking to get a new crush sleeve as the ring and pinion was removed previously (Carrier number is 2821960) and the one on it seems small (Approx...

Re: type "O" rear end?

I know this is an old post, but you said that The "Richmond gears fit the 671 carrier which is the 3 series v=carrier...Just alot more of them out there and you can use a 8.5 modified spacer to use the 673 2 series posi and get the 3.42 and 3.90 and 4.10 aftermarket gears to work also." I ...

12 Bolt Cover Olds rear end

Hoping some one can help me. I have a 1970 cutlass supreme with a 8.5 O type rear end with 2.56 gears. I know this rear end is unique to Oldsmobile but I am looking at upgrading to 3.73 gears and need to know if this can be done without changing the carrier (use a spacer instead). Also if some one c...
