Re: GM ring & pinion gear set
Is that surface rust a concern? I assume some scotchbrite will remove it as long as there isn't any pitting?

Re: GM ring & pinion gear set
Ok, Well It sounds like maybe something was not installed totally correct if the driveline shop said the pattern looked good and they drove it and it was quit...??? They never drove it. I dropped the rear end off and had them change the bearings then I reinstalled it in the car. I saw it had gear m...

GM ring & pinion gear set
Have a 1981 2nd gen Firebird with a corporate 8.5" 10 bolt rear 3.42 ratio. I need to change out the original 105K mile R&P due to some loud gear whine at 45 mph+ when coating. I am going to "assume" it's a worn r&p causing this because I had all new bearings installed in this...

Re: Pinion seal leak
Had the rear on jack stands nose down with some gear lube in it for 2 days and no leak. Have yet to put it in service but I am hoping it'll be good to go.

Re: Pinion seal leak
Just got a call from the driveline place. I am not sure what they tried to fix the leak as I won't be able to talk to them until tomorrow, but they claim the only way they were able to stop the leak was to replace the flange with a new one and use an "updated" two piece seal. Can you clue ...

Re: Pinion seal leak
That is why we ALWAYS always use RTV on the OD of the seal metal surface that meets the housing ID surface. There might be a screw driver pry scrap in your housing casting where the seal meets the housing casting machined surface. WE run into this alot. BACK yard mechanic screw driver pry bar issue...

Re: Pinion seal leak
Jim thanks for your reply. I may need your help with this issue later but for now I took the rear back to the shop who assembled it to see what they can do. I didn't want to disassemble anything until I gave them a chance to fix it. I told them there was an issue with a leak from the pinion seal whe...

Pinion seal leak
'81 Pontiac Firebird Formula with it's original 10 bolt 8.5 104K miles on it. No gear noise but had some bearing noise and a real bad pinion seal leak when I got the car recently. Took a close look at it. Noticed someone recently replaced the seal. Definitely not leaking thru splines. It's past the ...

Re: 1971 Olds 10 bolt
BR9 appears to be a one piece straight roller type bearing and not a tapered cup like the A9. The BR9 looks like the original bearing that is on this 8.5 I have....

Re: 1971 Olds 10 bolt
Thanks for the help. I got some misinformation before and it definitely is 8.5 not 8.2 Casting #407296 Ratio code: SA Tried to post a few pics but I get error message sayin too large. I plan to sell this any suggestions as to it's value? It's a 2.73 open and everything appears to be in great shape. ...

Re: 1971 Olds 10 bolt
I'll get pics asap... What do those green areas you have circled signify? The cover is similar to a chevy 12 bolt cover but the rib is shorter on this cover......runs from 12 o'clock to 3. I just saw a couple of pics of this cover online on another forum and it was said to be a Olds corporate 8.5. H...
