Looking for GM 8.5 posi shims
Jim, I want to rebuild an 8.5 GM "Z" spring posi. The spider gears were a little loose on teardown, but clutches look to be in good shape. Do you have any thicker shims to shim it up,or where can I pick some up? This is for my own personal build, and not looking to drop a new posi in,BTW. Th...

Well if your putting the Pontiac engine in the El Camino to beat the SBC in your Firebird, you are a wise man who understands the torque of the Poncho!

That sucks!
I have a feeling nothing is going to change for at least 4 more years,if you know what I mean.

Re: 81' TA posi carrier
Thanks Jim.
I was just going by the differential ID page on this site,it says that 70-80' Firebird/Camaro is 8.5. So I figured this might be something else being an 81'.

81' TA posi carrier
Jim, I have the chance to pick up the gears and posi from an 81 TA. I need a 28 spline axle posi though. Do you know if an 81' TA is the 28 spline or the 30 spline axles? Also, this posi/gears are going to be for an 8.5" A-body rear,is an 81' TA even an 8.5? I thought 80' was the last year fireb...

8.5 yoke question
I have a 71' Cutlass 8.5. It came with no yoke on the pinion gear. I have a 79' Trans Am 8.5 that I can use for parts. Can the yoke from the TA be used on the A-body's 8.5?

Re: '71 Olds Cutlass rear end (?)
I'm no guru, but I'm building a 71' Olds 8.5 right now, and it looks identical to yours.
I'm 99% sure that's what you have there.
BTW,these are very good rear ends! I sought out an 8.5 just to replace the 8.2 that came in my GTO originally.

Used ring/pinion break in
Jim,
The 8.5 I'm setting up will be using used GM gears. I'm curious if the break in procedure is for heat cycling or gear mesh break in? If heat cycling, I would think I can just set it up and go? Any break in required when setting up used ring/pinion?
Thanks.

Re: HELP advice on gear pattern
I'll throw my opinion in. To me it looks like the pinion is a hair too close to the ring gear. I'd say pull another .001-.002" out from under the pinion.
I'm still a rookie though,I would of coarse wait for Jim's blessing! It just helps me learn to look at patterns too.

Re: Rear end gearing
I put 3.90's in my 71' GTO this year. Kind of "buzzing" above 55 MPH. More of a street/strip type car so I knew this going in,and am fine with it. BUT, I can't imagine driving this thing above 60 MPH,and only for a short time period. You do at least have a relatively tall tire. If you do h...

Rear end cleaning
Jim, Just tore down another 8.5 getting it ready to ship out to the sandblasting shop. This thing was NASTY on the inside. In the past I used to spray brake parts cleaner down each axle tube and run a rag through the tube with a broom handle or rod, kind of like cleaning a shotgun barrel, until the ra...

Interchange between bolt-in and c-clip carriers/rears
Jim, I have an 8.5 71' Cutlass rear I plan on rebuilding. It has an open carrier right now. I have the chance to pick up an 8.5 posi carrier from a Nova,so I assume it's a c-clip type carrier. From what I understand I can use a c-clip carrier in a bolt in axle rear, but NOT the other way around ,corr...

Thanks Jim,just wanted to double check.
Probably be an over the winter project for me. I'll get a hold of you in a few months for a rebuild kit.
