Okay Jim, what do we have here? Can you id it? 7/16 bolts, I don’t yet have the axle spline count. Suspecting a B-body unit. Any way to tell what series for gear ratios?
Thanks,
Kurt

Re: '65-'67 Olds rears
Yes, sealed bearings they are.
Thanks, Jim. I guess that completes our '66-'67 Olds 10-bolt primer for now.
I'm still trying to find out how extensive the use was of the 4-pinion carriers in these P rears with Oldmobile, but that's just leaves a very small part of the puzzle.

Re: Oldsmobile 1971 10-Bolt Rear Axle
I see we're covering this on CO forum too. Last of the cone posi in Olds was '67. Everything you describe is correct to a '71 *except* clips. Are you *sure* there are clips?

Re: '65-'67 Olds rears
Okay. Does the later '70 '71 '72 7/16" bolt carrier fit the earlier ('67 in this instance) P housings? In other words, are the carriers interchangeable?

Re: '65-'67 Olds rears
That definitely reads GM 2 670 OA Right before the 6 is a vertical mark, but it really doesn't look like a stamp. If it is, it is a "1". The ring in the '67 W30 rear (which was originally 4.33 and replaced at some time with 3.55s) reads: 39 11 GM 9 6710 I don't know how they are supposed t...

Re: '65-'67 Olds rears
It is buttoned back up so I can't measure. Does this pic tell you?
Are you sure about the date? Can't be like 2 (Feb) 67 (1967) 0 (shift or ?)

Re: '65-'67 Olds rears
Are your 4.11 4.10 gears original GM gears or aftermarket? You can look on the edge of the ring gear outer diameter it will have a GM part number and tooth count of the pinion and the ring gear and some letter suffix codes. Jim Okay, I'm back. Opened up the rear on my May '67 built '67 442 with the...

Re: '65-'67 Olds rears
I'll get you that casting info. Yes, it would *seem* that '67 W-30s would go with the new heavy duty "O" rears, but they had initial problems with their new rear, and they went with the 4-pinion "P" rear. There is very little known about what exactly the problems were were. But s...

Re: 1965 Olds Cutlass Rear Gear
Wrong only in that it is for a different range of gears. Otherwise, it is exactly the same. The one you have is more for the "performance" gears, and generally more sought after. But I just don't understand the "not available" part.

Re: 1965 Olds Cutlass Rear Gear
I checked, and there is the Auburn 5420114 that is for the 3.23 and higher (numerically lower) gears that your 3.08 gears should fit, so I don't understand their "no such gears are available" answer at all.

Re: 1965 Olds Cutlass Rear Gear
Yes, for sure. I believe it is basically the same thing, but takes higher gears.
Someone who has that carrier that wants steeper gears may be willing to swap you.
Jim?

Re: 1965 Olds Cutlass Rear Gear
Jim will be along to correct me if I'm wrong, but: Yes, the housing you describe is a "P" Pontiac 10 bolt gear, 10 bolt cover rear. That is the OEM rear for a '65 Cutlass. Unfortunately for you, the 3.55 is the highest (numerically lowest) gear for that carrier. The 3.23 and 3.08s require ...

Re: '65-'67 Olds rears
One more scan, from the "Specifications, Parts and Tune-up Information....." published 3/22/67.
Interesting that the next few pages show just the "standard" 2-pinion Anti-Spin that is in the regular Chassis Service Manual.

Re: '65-'67 Olds rears
The gears not doubt has been changed, they're 355s. Stamped "39 11 GM 9 6710" How do you like the brackets welded to the bottom of the tubes? To bolt on traction bars, I presume? Anyway, there's the Q5 stamp, exclusive to the P-type '67 W-30 with 4.33 gears. Also attaching scans of the fact...
