Re: Forged vs. Cast Axle Identification (BOP 8.2)

ID ind forged and or cast axles. Will have to do more home work on that... by the time we get most rears for reconditioning they NEED axles and rarely get reused again. :( 45 + years of punishment just is not good, and also the car sitting on the axles in back yards and wrecking yards tossing cars a...

Re: Forged vs. Cast Axle Identification (BOP 8.2)

Sorry been racing at the last Big Sportsman race here in Northern Ohio... Will try to get some answers. All the Hardened axles we have pulled have the single retaining plate whole no multiply hole flange. they are in the Nodular housings and had very heavy tapered spline ends... Castings were also r...

Re: 68 and up a body Chevy 12 width verses 65 Catalina width.

Lowers are too wide on your Pontiac...Much wider car than a a-body Chevelle and the upper are the biggest problem with them being too wide and totally different angles. Until you have them in front of you you just see upper bushing and think oh they looks close...lol. THEY are NOT. NOW anything can ...

Re: 12 bolt ring gear 10 bolt cover/ 12 bolt chevy

1965-1970 Pontiac (FULL SIZE CAR REAR) That is your main difference. The rings are the same 8.875 diameter But that is where the similarities STOP. Ring gear bolts Pontiac are 7/16" x20 (Right and left hand thread early or late) Ring gear bolt s Chevy are 3/8 x 24 (right hand thread only) Pinio...

Re: 1965 Pontiac 2+2 rear end gears

Hi Welcome to the site... Unfortunately we have bad news. No Aftermarket gears any steeper than 3.55 for the Pontiac 8.875 FULL SIZE car rear with bolt in 31 spline axles. 10 bolt cover 12 bolt ring gear. NOW hope is still there. If you can find a original GM set of 3.73, 3.90, 4.10, 4.33, 4.56, 4.8...

Re: 1970 12 Bolt "O" Detroit Truetrac

I am sure you could... But the support of the flange is critical to defection under loads of the pinion trying to drive the carrier round and round. and the ring gear can only have so much removed also as you have to get the bolts into the ring deep enough for good retention also. Jim Then the cost ...

Re: 1970 12 Bolt "O" Detroit Truetrac

No , you can not do any aftermarket unit for a 2.56 or a 2.78 gear in a 12 bolt olds. NO one makes the correct offset. 8.5 offset is for the 3.08 3.23 gear set in the 12 bolt olds conversion. :( Sorry.

Re: how to get the most from your motor...

Yes, but also think about if you do find a 2.93 the RPMs will move up some too. That is your call but yes 2200 with 2.56 and freeway driving will be fine. If you ever want to upgrade do a tranny cooler it helps too especially if your switch your mind and do the 2400-2500 stall. :) Just measure diago...

do not go too high as the freeway will over heat your trans as it will not fully lock ... 2000- 2500 that is it. with 2.56 or 2.93 gearing Jim

Re: how to get the most from your motor...

cam seems to be right in the wheel house of working with your combo. 1800 - 5000 so if you stall in the 2000-2500 range it will pep up nicely So I definitely start with a easy swap of a stall converter which will make a great difference out of the hole with that camshaft. Timing should always be fig...

Re: 67 Catalina

Well back in the day THIS Pontiac rear was the rear to have. They did support the rear from the factory with speed parts. BUT it is going on the 52 year old mark now - Catalina 2+2 were the race cars in the day. they had 4.33 3.90 3.73 gears for this rear and they are out there still just they are h...

Re: 67 Catalina

Eric, As always ...bad news? Full size car rears from 1965-1976 are all on their own . Your stuck with what you have or you will need to pay for a CUSTOM rear. The upper control arm mounts are the hardest thing to get around and cause all the issues of an interchange. We had Ideas of making custom r...
